The Story Behind The Song "Daughters in His Kingdom"

Every song has a story of its inspiration and purpose. Most of us may never know the stories behind the beautiful songs of our church, but when we do, or are a part of that story, it needs to be shared. "Daughters in His Kingdom" is such a song!
In September 2011, Renée Packer, Stake Relief Society President in the Layton Utah South Stake, was visiting with her ward Relief Society President Raegene Weston, who voiced her concern that some of the young women entering into adulthood had a challenging time accepting that they were now going to be a Relief Society sister. Sister Weston said that lessons and songs were taught in Primary to help boys prepare for the priesthood, but she couldn't think of any songs or lessons that would help the girls look forward to Relief Society.
Renée, who also volunteers in the Relief Society Building resource room in Salt Lake City, discussed this issue with Sister Denise Doxey of the General Relief Society board, and proposed the idea of asking someone to write a song that would help the sisters of the church, from Primary age on up, to have a greater understanding of their purpose and potential as faithful women and daughters of God. Sister Doxey told Renée to go ahead with the idea and suggested the title as it stands today.

Testimony: Every Act of Kindness Plants a Seed

The Daughters in My Kingdom book is an amazing book, and I would like to bear my testimony on how it has, and will, influence my life. Reading this book has made me realize how important it is to be part of such an amazing organization. It is teaching me love and to have compassion for others and how to serve.
How lucky am I to not only be a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but to also be part of an organization, such as the Relief Society, that helps and serves others. Every little act of kindness that we do plants a seed in someone’s life. The seed that we plant in someone’s life can change their life forever, and how awesome it is to be a part of that life-changing experience.
Daughters in My Kingdom is teaching me to be the person I want to be, and hopefully I will be able to touch someone’s life in the same way that mine has been touched. I love this church, and I am so grateful for the missionaries and members who took the time to plant the seeds in my life, and because of it my life has changed forever, and I now have a strong testimony because of it.
Am I happier? You better believe it, and I can’t think of a better place I would rather be in my life, and I hope that I will always be an example to all those that I come in contact with. I will continue to strive to do the things that would be pleasing unto the Lord. I say these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

Testimony: I Have a Renewed Trust in Heavenly Father

For most of the first 20 years that we were married, I was involved with Young Women. More than once over those years I was approached by a young girl who was concerned about her worth as a woman. One even openly lamented that she had not been born a man, because of the blessings and privileges that were so obviously theirs.
Each time, I would talk with this precious girl about our very special role and share that if I were given the choice of whether to be a man or a woman, I would choose to be a woman, with all of the responsibilities and gifts that come with it. The joy of my part in Heavenly Father’s plan filled me.
However, I must admit that, as the years passed, and I studied more and observed more, with shock I realized that somehow a worry and concern about my eternal role in Heavenly Father’s eyes had slipped in, almost unnoticed, until it one day I realized that I was very shaky as to how Heavenly Father viewed his daughters.

Testimony: Our Greatest Work Is Within Our Homes

I always looked at Relief Society as a wonderful organization from the time I was a small girl growing up on a farm in Southern Idaho. I would go with my mother at times visiting teaching, to visit the sick and afflicted, and at times to take meals and other things to people. I saw and felt the strength of the women and was excited for the day I would be a part of Relief Society. I have always felt a love and belonging in Relief Society. I am amazed by the good that comes and all that can be accomplished when things are done in the name of the Lord.

Initially starting this historical work Daughters in My Kingdom, I felt (being a student) it as a burden and viewed it as another history text that I would never remember. But I was enlightened, delighting in its truth and simpleness. Though I’m still only halfway through it, I’ve found myself through the women of Relief Society, discovering who I am because of the organization I take part in.
Truly inspired, following in the footsteps of these great women gives me spiritual strength and comfort. I am assisting in the Lord’s work, and I would that we all could follow Him for eternity. Spiritual learning isn’t solely found in the scriptures, but in all the wondrous works of God.

I have only started reading Daughters in My Kingdom and am impressed with the feelings and inspiration I enjoy as I read. Like the scriptures, I highlight and consider the thoughts that come to my mind and feel in my heart. The book has been an interesting refresher on my role as a woman in the Church and in general. I have my own concerns as a mother and wife in these times, but it is always comforting and enlightening to read about and be among exemplary women who follow through with righteous causes.

It has been a joy to read Daughters in My Kingdom. I was so touched by the many stories of women throughout the history of Relief Society. Their strength in times of trial is inspiring, and their faith in the Lord and their dedication to His gospel has given me a great example to follow. I cried when I read about the pioneers and their sufferings...especially in losing their babies. My heart aches for them. Reading this book reminds me that we all have the same tender feelings of love for our children regardless of time or place on this earth.
I loved reading about how the Relief Society was a part of the Restoration and that the Restoration would not be complete without it. I know that the Lord loves the women of the Church in all ages. I have a testimony of the influence that women have. Their influence is powerful and important. It is easy to see this in reading the Bible. Daughters in My Kingdom affirms the importance of our influence.

I was given Daughters in My Kingdom and under the circumstances set it aside. I told myself that I would and could just get to it later. The funny thing is, is that I got called to be a Relief Society Historian and still had yet to read it... that very next day I started reading! I made sure that I had a pen and highlighter, for I knew that I was going to need it!

I am so thankful for Christ, and the life that He led and that He died for me.I loved reading about the beginnings of the Relief Society; I’ve never really paid much attention to the details. Joseph Smith was a wonderful prophet, and of course his wife just as incredible. I appreciate her drive and enthusiasm and how she would buoy up the women around her to serve.

I have marked numerous passages that have touched my heart. There is so much information to digest. I have gone back and reread many pages. Testimony: Blessed by "Daughters in My Kingdom"

I wanted to take this opportunity to write a brief testimony concerning the book Daughters in My Kingdom. After receiving the book, I read through it entirely within a few days. It was a source of inspiration and guidance to turn its pages and take in the wonderful text. I learned so much about the history of Relief Society and faithful sisters who paved the way before us with selfless acts of kindness, hard work, and spiritual growth. I felt strengthened by this knowledge. On a personal note, I found the book to be a great source of strength to me while going through some difficulties. I found a new light in my testimony of visiting teaching, kindness to others, patience, and unconditional love.
I know this book was truly inspired. I know that it will touch the lives of all the sisters who read it. There is truly a spirit of unification and love in this book that inspires to serve in the gospel and to be like our Savior, Jesus Christ.

Throughout my life I have been blessed by many sisters in the Church who have served and loved me and those around me. While I was reading the book Daughters in My Kingdom, I prayed I would be able to gain something from the pages. I did. I realized how important each one of us sisters is and how much we not only need to help one another, but we also need to let others serve us.
I am the type that can easily see what needs to be done to help a friend or neighbor in need, but when it comes to letting down the barriers and allowing someone to help me, I struggle.

As I was reading today in Daughters in My Kingdom, I felt impressed (finally) to share my testimony. The quote by Spencer W. Kimball has stayed with me, “To be a righteous woman during the winding-up scenes on this earth, before the second coming of our Savior, is an especially noble calling....She has been placed here to help to enrich, to protect, and to guard the home—which is society’s basic and most noble institution.”
I have been thinking of the righteous women I surround myself with each day, my mother, my daughters, my sisters, my neighbors, my dear friends, all who have influenced my life for good. I testify that they are who they are because of who they became before they came to this earth life.

I was so excited to get the Daughters in My Kingdom book. The sisters of the stake were so energetic when they told us about the book. As I started reading I had a hard time getting through the book. But there were parts here and there that really made me sit back and think. I can more appreciate my pioneer family for all that they went through so that I can live here in comfort.

Testimony: Live up to Your Privilege

At the beginning of December, our sweet stake Relief Society president visited our ward and promised that if would read Daughters in My Kingdom, we would be doing the “essential thing.” I am so grateful for that promise.

I have come to know that visiting teaching is a sacred calling that our Heavenly Father gives to His daughters.
The past month has been a sweet, spiritual time for me as I made reading this book a priority. I have come to know that visiting teaching is a sacred calling that our Heavenly Father gives to His daughters. We are the only ones that can succeed in this calling. I have it in me to do great things for those I visit.
This book has helped me understand what it means to “Live up to Your Privilege.” I pray that I truly can live up to the many blessings and privileges my Heavenly Father has given me and that I can serve those I visit teach the way my Heavenly Father would want me to.

I believe we have an obligation to study the past so we can learn from our predecessors and build upon their knowledge. I liked the quote from Spencer W. Kimball that “women who have a deep appreciation for the past will be concerned about shaping a righteous future.” I feel my every action every day as I raise my family is my attempt at shaping a righteous future.

In the preface of Daughters in My Kingdom I read a quote by President Spencer W. Kimball that said, “We know that women who have deep appreciation for the past will be concerned about shaping a righteous future.” I have to say now that I have read this book that I understand and agree with this statement.
I have always been amazed with the work that women were able to do before washing machines and telephones, but to read about the service and never-ending work that was done by these faithful early Relief Society sisters was outstanding.
I was touched especially by the stories of visiting teaching, what visiting teaching has done for other women, and what are the best ways to do visiting teaching. There was a quote by Sister Mary Ellen Smoot that said, “My desire is to plead with our sisters to stop worrying about a phone call or a quarterly or monthly visit, and whether that will do, and concentrate instead on nurturing tender souls.” This summed it up well for me that it really is not about “getting it done” but about the women themselves.

I knew that a history of Relief Society was coming to all the sisters in the Church, but as I held the book in my hands for the first time I instantly felt the love of the First Presidency and of my Heavenly Father. Testimony: The Strength of a Worldwide Sisterhood

I loved reading Daughters in My Kingdom! I took Renee Packer’s suggestion to read it with a pen in hand and allowed myself to mark up the pages by underlining words and stories that stood out to me. I also recorded my own comments and first impressions of what I read. I felt myself being validated as a woman, a wife, a mother, and a member of this church in every way that the world does not.
I truly felt the Spirit as I read, the same way I would as I read my scriptures. I felt a deeper sense of responsibility resting on me as I realized what being a member of this Relief Society means.

There were so many great things in the book that made me proud to be a member of the Relief Society in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
